Compound Bow

I've been researching compound bows.  I don't know anything about bows at all.  At first, I wanted a crossbow, but my Marine son suggested I start off with a compound since it would be easier and less costly.

After hours of reading forums and researching, I decided that I will go to Cabelas and talk to them when I can.  It is the only place with a huge selection of bows, an indoor archery range, people to teach, etc.

I am leaning towards this bow:

But I'll see what I can actually use.  I'm expecting to spend about $500-$1000, but I can't go too high or I won't be able to buy the wood stove.   My son is also encouraging me to buy a .45 and a good hunting knife.  The .45 is for personal protection not hunting - just in case anyone thought that.
